Article by Jack Mitchell

All of the fishermen, especially those who live in North Carolina love to compare the lakes in their place and also how they make fishing a great hobby.

When you start to pile things up, it becomes noticeable right away that there are some “kissing cousins” among bass lakes in the Tar Heel State of North Carolina: reservoirs that look like each other closely are enough that they are said to “fish alike.” And that no two reservoirs are more strongly related, it can be argued, than High Rock Lake and Buggs Island Lake.

Heres a tip for you crank bait fishermen: If you use the clip locks, use the Norman Speedclips, taking the factory split ring off so the clip goes directly to the bait keeps the action of the bait true and you have a lot less trouble with the line fouling. That is best to use in North Carolina Bass Fishing.

For bass pro and Buggs Island guide Joel Richardson, summer bass success means hitting main-lake structure in 12 to 20 feet of water. are relatively shallow, as Piedmont lakes go; they are fed heavily by tributary creeks but affected more by river current, and no one will ever confuse them with clear lakes. They’re also shallow enough upstream that navigation into the upper areas can be touchy.

And for some glorious reason, all of those features cause or allow bass to bite on those three reservoirs when the weather is pushing 90 degrees and more pages on the calendar have been throw away than are remaining.

They are the kingpins of their respective river systems – High Rock on the Yadkin and Buggs Island on the Roanoke. They are both relatively fertile, growing good populations of bass, stripers, crappie and catfish of various shapes and sizes.

This will melt the plastic back together. Obviously you don’t want to use this trick over buying new baits, but if you’re stuck on the water with no spare baits, this will get you through the day.All of them are fed by a lot of very nice, large creeks. None of them would ever be considered “clear” by any stretch of the imagination. All of them have a very strong rung at the bottom of the food-chain ladder: great populations of baitfish.

Now take this as an example, the three wonderful reservoirs in the Piedmont region of North Carolina: Buggs Island Lake, Jordan Lake and High Rock Lake. None of them are tremendously deep reservoirs. At least three fishermen in North Carolina appreciate this phenomenon.

When you rip a hole in your soft plastic bait, heat the blade of your knife with a lighter and insert the hot blade in the tear.

After a heavy down pour fish anywhere you can find water running into the lake this water will be full of nutrients starting a vibrant food chain and bass will be all over it.

Stitching. Lots of big Bass specialist uses this method for connecting with BIG Bass. You simply pull the bait along very slowly with your hand rather than your reel. This forces you to slow down and really enhances the feel of your bait and any pickup.

Everything from why you are supposed to wear your life jacket, theories on the shape versus size of baits and why some colors work and some don’t. You will also find general tips about how to arrange or store your tackle, equipment needed for shore fishing, and ways to stay safe when you are out enjoying our great sport of bass fishing.

Beginners for bass fishing is a significant area to cover. I hope that we have been able to help you out as a beginner in having a north Carolina bass fishing and hope that you will return for more beginners tips and articles soon. Now what are you waiting for? The water is just waiting for you to come around and fish. Get your equipments ready and be bewildered with your first catch.

Experience bass fishing in north Carolina to have that new feel and experience that you won’t want to miss all your life.

You can use frozen peas to catch all the vegetarian fish. I have fed them (unshelled) peas while snorkeling and seen some that were over twenty pounds. You might try putting three on one baitholder hook, another thing to use for the vegetarians is moss wrapped around the hook. You can find it (the moss) all around rocks nearest to and in the water around shorelines of creeks, bays and lakes. The locals pull tiny shrimp out of the seaweed piles that amass all along the shorelines and use a large clear (water fillable) bobber one quarter full of water to cast it out and it sinks to the depth where the air left in it stops it’s descent. Of course chunks of shrimp and pieces of frozen anchovies or mussels will work almost as well.

Tips on where to go lobstering & spearfishing, Harbour Island, Bahamas?

hi i am from Hawaii and am planning a trip during the second week of March to The Bahamas. I am a intermediate diver with a couple years experience spearing grouper and hog, and lobstering, in Miami (i lived there for a few years for college). I am staying at a B&B in Harbour Island for a week and would like input on lobstering and spearfishing.

What I DO know:
- min. 200 yards from shore for spearing
- lobster season still in sesh
- size & bag limits, license at customs entry, etc.

What I DON’T know:
- what part of the island is good (any map ideas? links?!?!)
- would it be better to rent a small boat for a day? is beach entry the way to go? suggestions!
- are the bugs going to be picked over since it’s the last month before season is closed?

If you have any names of boat rentals, fishing spots, etc., I would be really appreciative. Try to keep in mind I am H.I. for 3 full days, so a day trip to Eleuthera would be okay, but not gonna go to Exuma or anything like that.

Thanks for your input!
i use stick & net for lobster. spearing for fish only.

What are some tips for grilling a whole small fish on a gas grill?

im cooking an OPELU. to all you people in the mainland (i live in hawaii) opelu is basically a small mackeral
id say the one fish weighs just under half a pound (maybe.45)
im cooking it whole on a gas grill
im thinking of some olive oil, rock salt and pepper, squeeze of lime juice
what are keys to cooking a whole small fish on the grill?
what heat should i cook it at? (low or medium, or somewhere in between)
“illegal to FISH in hawaii” LOL LOL LOL LOL
thats the funniest thing ive heard in a LONG LONG TIME
what is illegal is to catch certain types of wish that are too young and not big enough yet
like papio (i think its called a “jack trevally” fish in the mainland)
they must be 10 inches long from head to beginning of tail (people always catch the small ones anyway) its not like theres fish police checking the size of your fish
fishing is legal on shore and in a boat
If i told you where i fish…. well then id have to k**l you LOL
the pier and harbor are popular easy to get to fishing spots
Honestly the best fishing spots are the ones that are hardest ones to get to
by that i mean you usually need 4 wheel drive and expect to walk quite a bit to get there
but yeah go to a pier or harbor for DECENT easy fishing

I would butterfly fillet the fish, soak it in some teriyaki marinade then grill it on hot heat so that it sears the meat a little.

Or you could rub it with olive oil and miso powder.

Can you tell me where you fish? I might be moving there next year.

I thought it was illegal to fish in Hawaii or do you fish from a boat?

(Edit) Okay cool. Yeah I thought it was illegal because the state wanted to keep the beaches clean for the tourists and stuff. It’s cool if you don’t want to tell me where you fish. I wouldn’t want hordes of people horning in on my sweet spot. Besides, you’re only on an island surrounded by water so how hard could it be to find a fish? LOL.

Surely you can afford $200-$300???? You can get a used canoe or Jon boat for that price. (Try looking in your local newspaper or on Craigs-list)

One of the best fishing boats I EVER had was a canoe. Canoes are easily transported, can get into bayous/lakes & rivers larger boats can’t, and you can slowly ADD things to them, (like swivel seats, Trolling motor, fish finders, Outriggers, Etc.), to make them more comfortable and “fishing/sea worthy”. (Check out this “dream” flat-back canoe called a Gheenoe- http://www.customgheenoe.com/gallery2/v/LoTide25/IMG_0307.jpg.html ) I had one of these, (Gheenoe) when I was in my 20′s.

To be honest, I caught BIGGER Bass out of my tricked-out canoe than either my Flats boat or my Bass boats.

Why?

Like I mentioned above, you can launch a canoe almost ANYWHERE. Imagine the implications to this…????

All those little ponds and small bayous you might have “eyed” on your way home from work/school immediately become accessible!!

Of all the Bass I’ve caught over 7-8LB’s, SIX were caught in small waters where larger Bass/Flats boats could not go.

Although you can use a Jon/canoe on bigger waters, it defeats the purpose of a smaller “launch anywhere” boat. And don’t think you can’t learn how to Tournament fish from a smaller boat- Mike Iconelli started his career fishing club tourneys out of a “slow”, “small”, 16FT Jon boat…….(as did many tourney pros)…..and WON consistently.

Think about it!!!

If you buy a canoe/jon at least your on the water and fishing! Holding out to get the “perfect” Tourney boat or Flats boat, (for FREE), is an absolute waste of your time! You can “learn the local water” just as easily in a smaller boat than a larger…..

SAVE your money!!!………You’d be surprised how cheap you may be able to find a used canoe or Jon boat….

Just remember- The fish don’t know or care what kind of boat you have…..!!!!! And when you start bringing stringers of fish back to the ramp, neither will anyone ELSE!

Bottom-line??? I guess you have to ask yourself- How “dedicated” are you?

Hope this helps ya??? Go check Craigslist! Good luck in your search!

PS- Thumbs up to Unmam- He is totally right about the current new boat buying scene…If you could save even more mullah who knows what you could purchase?!!!

Yes. The lake near the golf course no real good luck there. If you can get to the smaller lakes on the right off daryple headed to the campus they seem to produce some fairly nice fish. Or try the stanford ave beach. If you can get there early try a spinner bait or top water as the sun gets higher try a worm or crank bait. Or night crawlers if you want bream or catfish.

Depends on the clarity of the water.

In stained water, a simple 1/16 OZ, 3 X strong, Jig/4″ Curly-Tailed Grub OR 1/2 OZ Weedless Gold Spoon with a Chartreuse colored trailer should work fine.

In a weedy, oyster-ridden, environment the BEST lure I’ve found for “tailers” are Berkley Saltwater Jerk-shads rigged with an Offset 4/0-5/0 weighted/unweighted hook (called Texas rigged)- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_75761_151004005_151000000_151004000_151-4-5

Nuclear Chicken, New Penny and Sardine are all good colors.

Here’s the hook you need- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_97832____SearchResults

In super-clear water, more “life-like” soft plastics would be more productive. Here are a few that have a good reputation for catching fish:

1. Powerbait Shrimp in “Natural” color, (fished on an Offset hook/Texas Style)- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_97168_151004005_151000000_151004000_151-4-5

2. Any soft plastic Crab you can rig Texas style- http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_16965_151004005_151000000_151004000_151-4-5

You will need to dose any non-Berkley products with a decent saltwater attractant to increase your fish catching ratio.

Obviously, try to approach any Tailers stealth-like. DON’T hit them on the head with your lure- it will spook them! Look to see in what direction they are “rooting” and cast your lure approx 4-6 FT AWAY- along the path they are headed.

DON’T “over-work” the lure- at best, just jiggle your rod for action. If your using Berkley GULP products, the scent alone will draw them in to strike.

Hope this helps ya?

You have an expensive boat why skimp on the rod and reel combo.
You might want to try fishing near the oil-rigs or following the shrimp and commercial fishermen as they do their thing. When in doubt you could try following out the charter boats.

Alligator Hunting In Louisiana?

Just making it known I’m only asking this question on yahoo answers for a laymen response that I can easily understand. I will be contacting several agencies over the next few months to confirm what I learn here.

Thank you for your answers in advance!

Okay, we have 9 members in our hunting party 5 of us are experienced hunters; the other 4 are first timers. We are planning on separating the nine people onto three boats of three hunters. What we would like to do is: use ores to move the boats to our hunting spot and use dead fish chum to lour the gators to our area. Now, on each boat we would like to have 2 bowmen and one rifleman. The bowmen will be using alligator tipped arrows each attached to a heavy duty cable. Once we spot the alligator the bowmen will shoot the alligator and basically just hold onto the cables for a long while as the alligator wears itself out. At the same time the other two boats will come together around the boat that is doing the hunting, to assist in if the sit situation becomes out of the main boats control. Once the riflemen have a clear shot at the alligators head, he takes the shot. If the alligator then goes limp we would use the cables to bring the gator in closer to the boat and put a couple extra bullets into its brain just for good measure. Once that has been completed turn the motors on and pull the dead alligator back to shore along side the boat, pull it up onto the shore and put a knife into its neck to sever its spinal cord, then take the gator off for processing.

This is my question, is this even legal? I talked to one of my close friends who also a hunter and he says that he believes that it is not, and if it is that I’m going to need to contact a specialist in order to be able to hunt in this manner. Our group doesn’t mind the cost of a guide, but we want to avoid using one if possible (we also want to avoid the whole chicken on a stick approach), however, we are okay with paying to use a hunting location.

If you could let us know exactly what kinds of permits and licenses we could use to accomplish this it would be greatly appreciated. If we are going to >NEED< a hunting guide to accomplish this that is fine also i just really we only need one between the 3 boats. But if you can tell us of a particular lake, stream, or swamp in Louisiana that allows this type of hunting we would be even more grateful. Best case scenario: my friend is full of it and this is completely legal with just a standard gun and bow hunting license.

You would do well to contact your local fish and game department or department of natural resources. The regulations from area to area vary greatly.
So for this certain hunting trip, they would be able to give you the best and most trustworthy advice.

Airflow`s answer is good bottom bouncers also at http://www.barlowstackle.com/ terminal tackle or http://www.basspro.com/tips
the bottom bouncer is to touch the bottom, not to drag the bottom
tie the main line to the top of the bottom bouncer, your leader on the horozonal wire.make the leader aprox. 4-5 ft. Long tie on your hook with bait.
Use anything spinners , neutral boyent plugs, worms, etc.
Make sure you let out only enough line to hold a 45 degree angle on your main line,or you will always be snaged.don`t drag the bouncer let it bounce or touch bottom once in a while.

How do I play WoW in moderation?

I have been playing WoW (world of warcraft) for about three years now. I started playing while I was in the Army. I had the same issues most people have, I didn’t do much else, I gained weight, I let it take over my life pretty much. I wasn’t a casual gamer, I was in top 200 world guilds, I was in the top 25 arena teams, I was hardcore. I haven’t played in about two months because I just thought it would be best to quit. I tried picking up console games (dead space 2 and fable 2 so far) and it just isn’t as satisfying, period. My wife keeps saying she doesn’t mind me playing because its cheaper than other hobbies I’ve been into, cars, saltwater fish tanks etc. Idk if I should start playing again because I don’t know if I can play in moderation or not.. nobody is telling me not to play. I really just miss it, sadly. Nothing seems to entertain me like WoW did. I tried the whole bar scene, I planted a garden, I bought a SUV and starting dointhe stereo system etc. I just get so bored!!! My question is, is there a way to play this game in moderation? I don’t want to get into raiding or anything anymore, just some casual pvp or bgs.

Really not looking for people to troll me, need some honest help. Maybe some tips for something to do besides play WoW.

Thanks in advance!

So far you have a good setup. Herbalism and Alch are good for money, however for druids, shamans and hunters Leatherworking and Skinning are great at 70, and for a warrior MAYBE Mining and Engineering, though you can work with warrior profressions alot. When you bank things it will be available at any bank (Thunderbluff, Orgimar, Undercity, Silvermoon, and all neutral banks). Note you don’t need to buy any slots until you have filled the very large original page.

admin answers:

Nano and pico sized tanks are unforgiving things at best. They tend to fluctuate heavily in water chemistry and temperature. As a rule, I generally only recommend pico and nano sized tanks if you already have experience in the world of saltwater, and, if you don’t and insist on keeping that small of a tank, not keeping any fish in it.

Until your larger tank is set-up and cycled, stick with the perc. That’ll pretty much cover stocking your 10 gallon tank (*while, admittedly, most people will recommend no smaller than a 20 gallon tank for even the smaller clownfish varieties).

On the scooter blenny note – take it back. Scooter blennies are NOT true blennies. They are, in fact, dragonets, closely related to the notorious mandarin dragonet, in fact. As such, scooter blennies tend to be just as iffy at feeding as a mandarin and are better suited to larger tanks with plenty of liverock and an ample colony of pods to feed upon. You’ll be much happier without him than watching a scooter dragonet waste away and die from starvation.

Anywho, a 75G is an excellent tank size for a saltwater tank. It’s not too large to be difficult to handle and not too small to fluctuate heavily in water chemistry. It’s depth and width also make arranging liverock and aquascaping much, much, much easier (*the standard 55G is only 12 inches wide, whereas the 75G is 18, leaving plenty of room). As per my best advice and tips : take your time and do your homework. You’ll be far better served in taking you time and going slowly than rushing headfirst into ANY tank (saltwater, freshwater, etc.).

You may find people recommending tangs, but avoid tangs. They really do better in long tanks (*we’re talking six foot long or longer) to cruise and graze. If you absolutely must get a tang, stick to the Zebrasoma varieties (yellow, sailfin, or purple), and avoid the Acanthurus (powder blue, powder brown, sohal, achilles, etc.) and Paracanthurus (pacific blue) tangs. However, again, I’d really advise against keeping any tang in any tank less than six feet long.

Personally, as per fish that pop, I love fairy wrasses, in particular, the solaransis fairy wrasse. There are several varieties out there than come in nearly ridiculous colors and are quite active. You may need some dither fish to make them comfortable and a secure lid to prevent tank jumping, but wrasses are lovely fish so long as you stick with smaller varieties such as fairies or flashers. As a word of concern, though, you must be very careful what wrasses you add, as certain wrasses have serious compatibility concerns. However, if you stick with fairy wrasses, many will mix well with little to no aggression issues and no invert/reef concerns.

Other eye catching fish include pygmy angels. They do not get too large and tend to only nip at corals or clam mantles.True, you may find specimens that will be downright voracious, but that is rather rare in the long haul. The flame and potters are a bit sensitive to water quality and ich prone, so beware.

A popular eye catching fish to AVOID is many of the dottyback (or pseudochromis) species. Most dottybacks have behavioral concerns and will attack anything that looks at all like them. In addition to that, many dottybacks will fade in color in captivity, losing any of their enticing qualities and leaving you with a mediocre looking little brat. If you like the look of dottybacks and do not wish to chance this, check out grammas, such as the royal gramma. The royal gramma is a lovely substitute for the bicolor dottyback and without the same aggression or fading issues.

Other things you can consider for making your tank pop is keeping more live corals, but you really want the tank to be established first before adding corals. Ricordea, for example, are relatively easy to care for soft corals that come in a variety of eyecatching colors. Personally, I’m a tubastrea (sun coral) nut, but it requires daily target feeding.

On a side note, to really make your tank pop, make sure you keep up with its upkeep both inside and out. Nothing says “meh tank” like a tank covered in algae or saltcreep.

Am I approaching weight loss with right steps? Any tips?

I was just wandering if the following steps that I am taking will result in successful weight loss and management?

My diet, now, only includes raw foods i.e. being fresh, unprocessed, whole foods (fruits, vegetables, grains etc). Across the week, I incorporate lean meat, fish, chicken, eggs. Across the day, I increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in meals (esp. to snack on!), alongside yogurts, nuts, museli, grains and such. I mainly drink water, otherwise oranges I squeeze (when I’m not lazy, otherwise water it is) and chrysanthemum tea – only because I like the taste, and it warms me up in the morning.

I have recently joined a gym, and have been going 4 out of 7 days a week for the past month. Every session, I work out for roughly an hour, most of the time with an extra 15minutes or so. My workout routine consists of both cardio and weight training – in intervals… So I begin with 20mins of cardio (usually 10kms on bike, but sometimes, just a brisk walk on treadmill @ 5.5-6 speed), then I stretch, use the fitness ball, and use machine weights. Then, I go back for 5-10mins of cardio (usually elliptical or treadmill). Afterward, I would train with some free weights – doing reps and such and some medicine ball twists, crunches and a few stretches. Then I go back for one last 10 – 15min cardio on bike. And stretch to end… That’s pretty much all I can fit in with my schedule.. school and homework calls. Oh, and I work out straight after school…

Any tips or advice? I’ll admit that I am quite overweight, but have a goal weight in mind, and hope to achieve it. I keep a ‘diary’ and record my food intake, and how many calories I burn from exercise along. Just counting the cardio, I burn a total of 700 calories per session, so with weight training… that’s a little on-top.

I believe that to burn fat, weight training is necessary as muscles do the actual ‘burning’ right? So, with that in mind, do you think what I’m doing now (the weights and cardio) is balanced? I gain weight proportionally, so I guess I will lose weight the same way? So will this type of ‘combined’ workout achieve this? I don’t want flab in one area.. and be toned in another.

Wow.. that’s quite a lot. If you’ve read it this far, kudos to you!

Please if you can include video’s, websites, and other ideas such as different bait to use, depths for setting my line and other things. P.S. unfortunately where i fish there are a lot of rocks for the hook to get stuck on since it’s at a marina as well as weeds since it is so close to shore. i know this is a good fishing spot according to all others who have fished there but i’ve not had the best of luck if you have any ideas please write them down.
You can obtain a lot of information via outdoornebraska.ne.gov ( most everything you need).
River fishing is my bag.
If you are fishing a rocky bottom you will want to use heavier line as snags are always going to happen. Gravel, sand or silt bottom on a river are easier to fish as lighter line can be used.
Mostly on a river I cast lures or fish the bottom with worms or other bait. On occasion I float fish but only in areas with slow water or where there is a big eddie. My favorite thing to do is to get in a shallow spot of the river above a deep hole and just lure cast the whole area. If that produced nothing I switch to bait. If I still get nothing I move to another spot.
Another little tip on the river is split shot – use only enough that your sinker will stop on the bottom, don’t overdo it.

admin answers:

Yes you can. When fishing for bluegill you usually use light equipment so the wind may carry the bait down the water which may cause you to re-cast quite often. Also, when you are fishing with kids, the most important thing is to keep them interested. When they catch a fish, congratulate them and tell them what a good job they did. Some tips for bluegill fishing are use worms and little bits of them on small hooks. Bobbers also work well but since it’s windy I would probably avoid them. Good luck fishin’ with the little tikes!

Instead of using a traditional fishing pole, you can get a fishing pole that has a push button on the reel that would be much easier for him to use. I started off using that type of fishing pole when I was 5 and it was easy for me to cast the line in. You can find them at a sporting goods store, or Wallmart. I found these http://www.zebco.com/catalog/youth.html but you can probably find some that aren’t so fancy. He can even put night crawlers on the hook or salmon eggs. Meal worms or cheese would be easiest for him. Put a bobber on the line so he can see when he gets a bite. Make sure there are sinkers on the line. You can also get a rope with hooks on it to keep you catch on. You put this in the water with the fish to keep them fresh. Get a net so you can fish your catch out, a hook removal tool, and a pole holder so he can set his pole down. Make sure you have a fishing license. Brings a first aid kit, water, and sunscreen. Have fun!

Can kids use poles for fishing?

Hi there, I have been fishing around 9-10 times now but all with just a normal course fishing rod so I am quite a newbie to the whole fishing world. I will be getting around £300 reletively soon and since I’m enjoying fishing so much I fancy spending it on some upgraded kit! I’m 13 years of age and I’m quite interested in beginning pole fishing, but I don’t know where to start! First of all, can kids use poles? I mean, they’re big things, and can youngun’s hold them without having to lift 10 kilo barbells for a week prior!
Secondly, what kind of stuff do I need to get started? Budget will be around £350-£400.
Finally, only if you can be bothered typing this! How do I pole fish? Any advise, tips, facts, guidelines would be much appreciated!

Oh, and I currently coarse fish – at Non Go By farm if anyone’s heard of it. Carp, Catfish etc.
No, no – I mean pole fishing, I already course fish with a rod. By pole fishing I mean those big long telescopic rods that stretch out. Sorry if I phrased my whole question wrong but that’s what I mean, hah.
I read that it’s pole prices range from £50-£5000 and the £50 break very easy and are pretty awful. It advises to start off with at least a £175 pole but £200 would be best.
Lol, mate – I am by no means spoilt – if you actually had more than a cell for a brain you would have read that actually I don’t plan to spend £5000 on a rod, and what I was saying was, as I quote: ‘I read somewhere’ – something that you need to do more often before you start calling people jewfish, and all the rest of your racist quirks. I said I will be getting around 300-400 pounds which I want to spend on the sport I love, from an ebay sale if you must know. Now, before you start unleashing all those adolescant insults on someone you don’t even know, I’d advise you to save up and buy yourself a book or two.

Oh, and nice one on the kid remark – looking at your picture you look younger than me Here’s some advise for you, ‘kid’ – grow up.

admin answers:

You can pole fish from any age. I would just go for a cheap one to test out, and find out your preference – rod or pole.

I prefer using rods. I think it is easier to play a fish with a rod and you have more control over where the fish moves. Pole fishing is good for getting under hanging branches and to drop your float on a precise spot.

With poles, you use elastic rather than line. All you do is hold the pole, let the fish swim where it wants and then you take away section by section as it gets closer.

Just remember fishing isn’t about having the top gear and spending all the cash you have. A business will most likely try to encourage you to spend a lot: the aim of a business is to get your money. You can catch more if you learn the lake, river etc. For example, where are the deep spots? Do they fish have a route? What time do the fish feed? Do the fish follow the wind? What are the best baits? Is their natural food? – That is the skill.

The striped bass is highly prized for its size, battle on the line, and culinary merit. Striped bass, also known as the striper or rockfish, are easily identified by the dark horizontal stripes across its silvery body. Striped bass can grow to more than 48 inches, weigh over 50 pounds and live up to 30 years. Striped bass is a very popular game fish for recreational anglers because of its size and the spirited fight it shows once hooked. It’s also a delicious fish and is quite good any way you prepare it: smoked, grilled, baked or fried.

A variety of artificial lures and chunks or strips of standard bait fish will attract stripers. Stripers can be caught on shad, anchovies, “cut” bait, spoons, plugs, jigs, crankbaits, and streamer flies.

Tackle

There are several types of tackle used for catching stripers. Almost any rod and reel heavier than a light spinning outfit is suitable for striped bass fishing.

The tendency is to use salt water gear with a medium to heavy rod, and 20-40 pound monofilament line. However, a medium to heavy spinning rod with 12 to 20-pound test line is considered ideal by many anglers for plugging, jigging, or offering bottom-fished baits to bass. Some anglers, who ply the beaches with swimming plugs and live eels, prefer the 10 to 12-foot surf rod and conventional reel spooled with 30 to 40-pound line. The lighter the tackle, the greater the sport, of course. Under certain conditions, however, fairly heavy tackle is desirable.

The novice should consult one of the bait and tackle stores in the striped bass fishing area for information about the types of leaders, hooks, and sinkers used by striped bass anglers. To avoid catching too many undersized stripers, it is advisable to use hooks at least half an inch between the point and the shank. Fewer small fish will swallow the large hooks, so serious injuries will be reduced.

Bait

Common types of bait include herring, bloodworms, and eels. These live baits are not used for catch and release fishing. Striped bass aggressively swallow their prey and any hooks attached. Although they may initially swim away, bass can later die from internalbleeding. To avoid creating fish mortality, you may want to use a circle hook. Circle hooks are shaped at an off-set angle so the fish set themselves and the hooks are not swallowed. Rapalas, Rebels, and Rattletraps are popular lures that are great for catch and release style fishing and can be trolled along bottom.

Live lining of “herring,” menhaden (pogies), or mackerel can be a very productive means of taking large bass. A fairly stiff boat rod with a conventional reel is the preferred rig. Baitfish is hooked through the back or snout using either a single or treble hook. When bait fishing, the preferred rig consists of a pyramid sinker attached as a fish finder, and a long leader with a brightly colored float attached close to the hook. The float keeps the bait away from the bottom-dwelling crabs and skates.

Remember, for successful bait fishing, it is generally necessary to keep the bait near the bottom. Strong tidal currents are usually present on striped bass fishing grounds; therefore, it is particularly important to have a varied assortment of sinkers, so the amount of weight can be adjusted to match the changing strength of the current. Striped bass may be caught either by bait fishing or trolling.

When trolling for bass adjacent to shoreline areas, the rod should be equipped with a high-ratio conventional reel and carboloy guides to prevent line wear. By choosing among monofilament, lead-core or wire lines, depths from the surface to the bottom can be trolled. Many lures, including swimming plugs, jigs, tubes, and umbrella rigs- as well as live herring and menhaden lend themselves well to trolling for stripers.

Smallmouth bass fishing is one of the most popular leisure activities of Americans today. The good thing about smallmouth bass fishing is that is very relaxing. According to experts, smallmouth bass fishing can help fight stress and help a person live better quality of life.

Getting Acquainted With Smallmouth Bass Fishing

There are a number of things that beginners should know about smallmouth bass fishing. If you are still new to smallmouth bass fishing, it would be a good idea for you to acquaint yourself with the different habitats of the smallmouth bass. Note that knowing where this type of fish lives and how they behave in their natural habitat is very important.

Generally, smallmouth bass prefer to live in cool water and follow the trail of their food sources. This type of fish is very sensitive to pollution in the water so you will not really find them in areas that are polluted. Another thing is that this type of fish is very sensitive to the changes in the temperature so they tend to move from one place to another during the year to find cooler places. In most cases, the smallmouth bass stays deep into the water during the summertime if you insist on doing some smallmouth bass fishing this summer, it would be best for you to find the deep portions of the river. For beginners, smallmouth bass fishing during the summer can be quite difficult so you will need to take an expert guide with you if you want to catch some fish. If you cannot afford to hire a guide, try to go with a friend who has been doing smallmouth bass fishing for quite sometime.

Favorite Habitat Of The Smallmouth Bass

Rivers are one of the favorite habitats of the smallmouth bass thus if you want to go smallmouth bass fishing with your friends, you should go to a clear river. The rock strewn part of the river is usually the favorite hiding place of the smallmouth bass. Find an area on the river that has hard and gravelly bottom. These places are usually the best spots for smallmouth bass fishing. In most cases, you can find the big ones at the back of boulders and rocks. On the other hand, you should stay away from soft sandy or muddy areas of the river when you go on a smallmouth bass fishing expedition. This type of fish does not like to live in muddy or soft sandy areas so do not waste your time trying to find them there.

Buying a used bass is a great way to get a good deal. Bass guitars typically have a rugged design, so even after years of use, despite some visual wear and tear, they can still be in great playing condition.

When shopping for a used bass, it’s a good idea to see some in person and play as many different basses as you can. Local music stores often have used basses that they sell on consignment, but even if they sell only new basses you can still use this to your advantage. A used bass will sound very similar to a new bass of the same model. If the sound of a new “model x” bass wins your heart over, you can trust that a used version of “model x” will have a very similar sound, so long as the company hasn’t changed its design.

If you want to look online for your bass, the two major websites to use are eBay and Craigslist.

Craigslist is best for going with a local seller that you are able to visit to see the bass.

Since Craigslist is not responsible for transactions that take place, there’s much opportunity for fraud when a person says he/she will ship an item to you. There’s no guarantee that the person will follow through. Buying locally eliminates this problem. Consider Craigslist not to be like an online store, but a way of getting in contact with local sellers.

eBay is good for buying a bass non-locally. Just make sure that the seller has a history of good feedback. If you decide to go with eBay, there are some pros and cons that you should know about.

Pros:
Variety of selection
Lots of sellers
Good deals available

Cons:
You can’t play the bass beforehand
Shipping costs

In regards to the first con, it isn’t always a problem. For instance, if you have played a certain model of bass before, you have a good idea of what it sounds like. And sometimes the seller will even have sound clips, or they may respond to a request for sound clips.

If you decide to go the route of testing out basses in person, if you’re a new player you might not know exactly what to look for. If you have a friend who is an experienced player, ask that person if he/she would be willing to come along with you. Here are some guidelines to keep in mind while you’re trying out used basses.

-Always play the bass through an amplifier to make sure the electronics are working properly
-Turn all the knobs back and forth a few times to make sure they don’t make a scratchy sound
-Wiggle the cord around a little to make sure the input jack doesn’t make a scratchy sound
-Check for loose knobs, screws, strap holders, and tuning keys
-With the bass at reasonable playing volume, listen to see if there’s background noise coming through There will always be at least a little, but make sure it’s not a distracting amount
-Wear the bass with a strap to see how heavy it is and how it sits on your body

With those guidelines in mind, the most important part of the bass is how it feels and sounds to you. When you play several different basses you’ll notice that some jump out at you while others just don’t feel right. The bass that you keep coming back to and can’t quite put down is a good bass to consider buying.

If you don’t have the option of testing out a used bass and have to choose one to buy, there are some tried and true brands with a reputation for having good quality lasting basses – Fender, Squier (by Fender), Ibanez, ESP, Yamaha, and Spector.

One alternative to buying used that you can consider is SX brand. Though they’re sold new, their low price range of 0 – 0 will give you a similar value to buying used. There are sound clips available at http://www.sxbasses.com
