What camera accessory should I get to photograph active kids?

Please be specific if you can (brand, model)
THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
I use natural light
I shoot mainly outdoors
I use a Canon 40D and use mainly a Canon 28-135mm marco 0.5 lens (has image stabilizer)
I have a Sigma EF-530 external flash

Fast prime lenses are your best bet – 50mm or 85mm f1.8 primes will allow a shallow depth of field (good for portraits) and a fast shutter speed to stop them dead in their tracks.
Use a bit of fill flash from on camera if you can’t set up light stands & off camera lighting, but dial it right down just to get a catchlight (ie it not your main source). You can get some drama if you shoot when light levels are falling a bit & underexposure the sky (brings the rich colour out) and then fill flash to balance flash & ambient.
A 5-in-1 reflector is always handy – both for bouncing light into the shade or with all covers off it makes a nice scrim (diffusion panel).
Edit: You should be getting it right in camera, not relying on Photoshop!

children’s fishing rod/and tips?
I have a while before this actually comes into play but i have been bouncing around in my head the best type of fishing rod and reel for my new up coming fisherman…when my lil one gets old enough to start fishining what kid of rod should i start him off on…
should i go with a good ol favorite for a beginner the zeboco 33 with a shakespear rod something like that
or should i get a childrens fishing combo with spiderman, cars, superman, something like that.
what i am wondering should i get him something that i know will last and i know that casting and retreiving can be learned or should i get a rod that will last for a good little while that has graphics that may draw his attention to the rod. either way, i think that both types of rod and reels will be a good choice but what do yall think….
i was wanting to stick with a zebco brand cause……i and i am pretty sure that almost all of yall that started out with a zebco and know that it is a good brand and a good rod and reel. what did yall start yalls lil fisherman/fishergals off with….any good tips that would be helpful to get the lil one interested in fishing when time comes.
this is one thing that i want to take my time on. try my best to not pressure him into it. i was pressured into so many things when i was a young buck and i dont want nothing to do with them now so i dont want to make that mistake with him….what do yall think

The novelty rods might help hold their attention when introducing them to fishing. Then once they are into it move up to the Zebco. One good rule about a rod for kids is to not get one that is to tall for them. If the child is say 3ft tall don’t get a 5ft rod because it is hard for them to control and cast. Fishing with kids from a parents point of view is all about patience. Those first few trip you take with him/her don’t even bring your tackle to fish because your attention will need to be 100% on them. If a kids sees their parent with big 7ft rods and large tackle bags they get discouraged with what they have and may be off to the playground leaving you with a Sponge Bob rod and reel in your hand. Kids don’t understand the progression of learning how to fish and if they see dad catching them and casting 25yards and they have nothing and can only cast 5 feet they are more likely to give up on it as my sister did. It’s good you are thinking about this as we need more parents introducing their kids to outdoor activities to help balance the mass use of computers and game systems. I have a nephew that claims to be the king of fishing video games but has only fished a handful of times and can’t even tie a simple fishing knot, there is something wrong with that kind of like kids that play Guitar Hero and have never touched and are intimidated by a real guitar. I am a firm believer that kids who are into outdoor activities are less likely to get into trouble with some of the dangers that face every generation of kids

A few questions about Fishing?
1) How much did you pay for your fishing license?
2) If you are caught without a fishing license how much does it cost?
3) When is the best time or season to go fishing?
4) Do you have any fishing tips or secrets to be better at?
I am not an expert on this, my kids and myself are self teaching how to fish, a few tips will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!
Thank you Crazy Horse and Dr.T.
I live in the bay area and I have a few coastal beaches and lakes near by. I live down the coast of hwy 101 close to San Francisco. Thank you!

Live in the Central Valley and a California fishin’ license be $38.85. Next year you’ll be seein’ the usual increase ~ best ta’ hold onto the link I’ve provided (CDFG aka California Department of Fish & Game) so you check out the new fees after Dec., 31st and for any future references ya’ might need it for. If ya’ get your license now it’ll only be good up to the 31st, which only gives ya’ a bout’ 4 months left before it has to be renewed. Last I heard the fine be around 250 buck$ along with the possible confiscation of any fishin’ gear you have. As for the season, just about anytime be the right time but, it can also depend on what species your lookin’ at. Have also given a good link the covers just bout’ every and all the fundamentals/basics of fishin’ both you and your boys will need. Good luck, be safe and “Fish On”

Ken asks…
How do I pick the right Fishing Rod and Reel?
I want to get back into fishing. Haven’t done it since I was a kid in Idaho.(And miss it dearly, I was pretty good at it.) Now living in Nevada. I know some spots in my area that have bass and trout. And I what to go back to Idaho and fish the Snake River for Catfish.
How long of a fishing rod do I need?
What kind of fishing reel?
What kind of fishing tackle do I need?
Any comments and/or tips about the subject would be a huge help
Thanks

admin answers:
You would need two very different set ups for the two types of fishing you described. For the Catfish in the Snake River you will need a much heavier rig. It also depends on how much money you would like to spend as it varies widely. Check into Bass Pro Shop or Caballa’s or Gander Mountain for gear to set up for your needs.

Nancy asks…
Tips for raising a kid to be good.?
I see it all the time. Parents with their little TV’s in the cars, distracting their kids so they don’t have to discipline or interact with them. I see horrible parents every single day and it makes me sick.
When I am a parent, I will not be one of these parents who expect the TV to raise their kids.
I will use every opportunity I can to teach my kids by example. I will read to them as children, not plop them down in front of a TV for hours on end. I will play and interact with them. My father never did anything with me. He’s been saying that we were gonna go fishing or hunting for about the past 12 years (I’m 22 now)…we never have. When I played football for one season in middle school, he never came to my games. He was always “too busy” (he wasn’t too busy, he just had no idea how to manage time).
I wanna be the dad that encourages his kids to do sports, join school clubs, do good in school and go to collegeand I want to be involved all along the way. I want them to know that they can do anything they set their mind too, and to never let anyone tell them they can’t do something.
I want to teach my kids to be good people. If I’m driving with my child and I see someone on the side of the road struggling to change a tire, I’m gonna pull over and help them and I’ll have my kid watch. I will teach my kids to be strong and stand up to injustice (like standing up to the school bully).
I will not be one of these parents who thing McDonalds 5 days a week is a suitable dinner. My kids will eat healthy, yet delicious food. I will allow them the occasional candy or other sweets, but not to the excess I see other parents doing. I will encourage them to be active, by taking them to the park, playing catch, etc.
Anyone have any thoughts/criticisms/suggestions for this? I don’t have kids yet, but I do watch my 2 year old niece alot (my sis and her husband live with me), and I want to be a positive influence in her life.
Sorry, I meant 2 MONTH old niece

No criticism here. You sound like you’re going to be a stellar parent. One piece of advice: Just remember…you can have all the best intentions in the world, but kids aren’t programmable robots; they experience the ups and downs of moods and emotions as they grow up, and maybe not want to participate in the things you think are in their best interests…. And there will be MANY times when you’ll feel unappreciated, and not listened to, and there will be times when you will feel frustrated and even angry. But, if you stay consistent with your discipline…AND your love…it’ll all work out. Even if you encounter problems, it won’t be because YOU didn’t do everything in your power to give them a loving home life. There are a lot of temptations and diversions in the world, and hopefully your love and strength will win out.
