Your Questions About Bass Fishing Answers

James asks…

What is the outlook on freshwater fishing this year? (2010)?

I will be doing the majority of my fishing in Eastern PA… Bass fishing, Trout fishing, Catfish fishing, Pike/Muskie fishing, Panfish fishing and whatever else I can hook. I am wondering how fishing will be this season considering the record snowfall in this area- maybe the snow will cool the waters and either make the fish more active or delay spawn or even make them more lethargic. Also looking for some local hotspot predictions! All answers are appreciated.

L expect you should have a good year there.

Consider though, the west coasters…
Depleted salmon runs and fishing availability, closures for rock cod fishing… Even being limited to the DEPTHS we can fish. Mass closures of hundreds of sq miles of ocean to angling, reduced stockings of lakes and streams.
Anglers here are in deep doodoo where our fishing is concerned. Although, so far, we have been told we will be allowed a limited salmon season this year. Maybe.

Fishing supplies and Bass fishing help?

Alright, so I am an avid spin-reel fisherman. The main game fish I go for is Trout, but am trying to move onto Bass (possibly Northern Pike in the future). I use a lot of basic stuff to fish for Trout, but what would I need for bass? Here’s a list of equipment I use:

Removable Split Shot (Medium)

1/8, 1/4, 1/2 Bell Weights

Eagle Claw Snells (Sizes: 12, 8, 6, 4)

Berkely Powerbait (Rainbow, Turbo Dough, Sherbert, ect.)

Roe

Line (Based on 3 Rods: 6lb Test, 8lb Test, 15lb Test (for trolling) all Trilene Dark Green)

Lures (Thomas Cyclone, trying out Kastmaster, Jake’s Lure, Panther Martin Spinners, Mepps Spinners, Deep Runners, Rattlers, Poppers, and sometimes Rapala)

Large, Medium, Small Canadian Nightcrawlers

Floats and Bobbers (don’t use often)

Swivels

Line Type: Monofilament (I have Flourocarbon but haven’t used it yet)

Eagle Claw Nitro Eggs (haven’t caught jack with yet :/)

Green Label Salmon Eggs

SO, what can I change or use more for Bass? I’m only 15, so I don’t have like a boat or things like that, though I do try to use professional sources. Any accurate answer will work, and be honest. Thanks.

Favorite lure/setup for bass fishing in a small pond?

Here in the Chicago suburbs there are lots of small ponds,1-10 acres roughly with most having no obvious areas of cover to fish for.I haven’t had much luck using one thing over another so far.The bass in these ponds typically don’t get above 3 pounds.I was wondering when you fish smaller ponds what have you had the most luck with?

10 points for best answer btw.
I don’t own any topwater lures or poppers.I figured the bass would be hiding deep and wouldn’t want to come up in the hot summer months. But we’ll see where this goes.
Oh and I doubt these ponds are much deeper than 10 feet max.

I also live in the Chicago burbs and fish the Fox River and small ponds on a regular basis. Try using a Rapala countdown. The beautiful thing about this little bait is that it sinks so you can reach some of those fish that are hanging in deeper water. Oftentimes the fish will hit the bait right when it hits the water! I usually use the CD-1, which is the smallest in the series, but you can go larger if you are fishing deeper water. The bait sinks about 1 foot per second so be sure to count as it drops and retrieve when you are at your desired depth. Good luck and happy fishing!!
